A Rack That Bolts to Your Roll Bar, Not Your Roof

Most JK roof racks hang their weight on your gutters, your hardtop, or a set of clamps that were never designed to hold 300 pounds of gear down a washboard road. The Maximus-3 JK Roof Rack – Long Platform does something different: four steel internal load-bearing brackets pass through the roof and attach directly to the JK's factory roll bar. 900 pounds parked, 400 pounds moving

Those two numbers are the ones worth understanding, because they decide what you can actually do with this rack.

The 400 lb dynamic rating is your driving limit — gear, bags, jerry cans, recovery boards, a spare wheel, whatever is strapped down while the Jeep is moving. That is a real number for a Wrangler roof, and it exists because the load path terminates at the roll bar rather than at sheet metal.

The 900 lb static rating is the parked limit, and it is the number rooftop tent owners care about. A hardshell RTT plus two adults plus bedding lands well under 900 lbs. The 76" x 54" platform also gives a tent something honest to bolt to — Maximus-3 sells lag bolt tent mounting hardware (RR3025TM) for exactly this.

One caveat: a rooftop tent is 130–200 lbs of dead weight that eats into your 400 lb driving budget before you pack a single duffel. Plan around that, not around the 900.

The two-inch claim is the point

The rack adds 2" to overall vehicle height. On a Jeep that already sits tall on 35s, two inches is the difference between clearing a parking structure and rebuilding a rack.

Low profile also means less of the drone that makes tall racks miserable on the highway. The Pioneer platform's mesh-style construction and the low leg design are aimed at wind noise and drag rather than at looking aggressive in photos. If you have ever driven 400 highway miles behind a set of tubular basket rails, you know why this matters more than any spec sheet line.

Worth noting: adding the optional Pioneer side rails (UN3009SR) puts 2.5" back on top. Rhino-Rack discontinued the full and front/rear rail kits, so side rails are the only option left if you want a lip to strap against.

You can still take the top off

This is the feature that separates a usable JK rack from a permanent one. Freedom Top panels come off with the rack installed, and the hardtop itself can be removed without dismantling the platform. For anyone who owns a JK specifically to drive it topless in July, a rack that forces a choice between cargo capacity and open air is a non-starter.

The through-roof mounts are sealed with rubber gaskets. Drilling a Wrangler roof is the part that makes people nervous, and gaskets are the answer to the obvious follow-up question about rain. Nothing exotic — just done properly.

The satellite antenna bracket being included is a small thing that tells you someone actually installed one of these on a JK. The factory antenna sits exactly where the platform wants to be, and a rack that ignores that leaves you improvising.

The ladder is the accessory to think hardest about. A 76" x 54" platform is large enough that reaching the far corner from the ground is a genuine problem, especially on a lifted Jeep. At $260 it is not a trivial add, but rearranging gear in the dark without it gets old fast.

Long or short?

Maximus-3 offers the same system with a 60" x 54" platform for $1,529.99. The long version costs $120 more and gives you 16 additional inches of deck.

The short platform makes sense if you mostly haul a couple of bags and want to keep the visual profile tight over the passenger compartment. Go long if you are running a rooftop tent plus gear, or if you want dedicated real estate for a spare tire, awning, and traction boards without stacking things on top of each other. For $120, the extra deck is the easier call for most builds.

The install

Five to six hours, rated moderate. That is an honest estimate for a job that involves headliner work and roof penetrations. It is a driveway-doable Saturday for someone comfortable with a drill and a torque wrench, and it is not a job to rush at hour five when the holes are already drilled. Maximus-3 publishes a PDF install guide for the 4-door system — read it before you start, not after.

One hard limit: this rack does not fit the 2-door JK. The whole design depends on the 4-door roll bar geometry. If you have a two-door, this is not the product.

Who should buy this

Buy it if you own a 2007–2018 4-door JK, you actually load your roof, and you want a rack that treats your roll bar as the structure it is. The load ratings, the 2" profile, and the ability to keep taking the top off are the three things that justify $1,649.99 over a clamp-on basket at a third the price.

Skip it if you carry a bike rack twice a summer, if you own a 2-door, or if you need the roof clear for a soft top workflow that a platform would complicate.
